I have practised as a clinical psychologist for over twenty years in hospital and community settings.
My initial training was in
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This is a style of therapy which stresses a
practical, common-sense approach, and is based on strict scientific evaluation. For this reason it is often
referred to as an evidence-based practice. CBT can be extremely useful for many common psychological problems.
I have trained in the use of hypnosis, and received the Diploma of Clinical Hypnosis from the Australian
Society of Hypnosis. Clinical hypnosis has nothing to do with the sensationalistic portrayals one sees on
television. It makes use of the natural human capacity for altered states of consciousness, and can be very
helpful in anxiety management, relaxation and meditation. It can also be used as an exploratory tool to
investigate parts of oneself which are less familiar, and can therefore be helpful in promoting personality
change. Hypnosis is not a magic wand, and I do not use it for addictive behaviours such as smoking, gambling
or drug abuse.
For many years I have practised yoga and Tai Chi, and I see a great deal of usefulness in these disciplines.
There are many applications relevant to clinical practice and personal growth, the most obvious being stress
management and relaxation. Many of these ancient techniques are now being scientifically validated, as Western
psychologists are discovering the value in Eastern traditions.
I have trained in Gestalt
Therapy, both in Australia and overseas. I regard this style of therapy as extremely
useful in enhancing communication between people, and clarifying relationships.
It relies on sharpening personal awareness, and bringing this into the arena of ones personal relationships.
After all, most of our difficulties (and pleasures) stem from our relationships with other people.
I have worked for a number of years with people who have been affected by road accidents, burns, industrial
accidents and other forms of trauma. This results in a challenging combination of physical and psychological
trauma, and often involves the condition known as posttraumatic stress disorder. Treating this condition
involves a careful process of rehabilitation, which may require a capacity to leave the past behind,
and to re-orient oneself to life as it is in the present.
I believe that the task of psychotherapy is first to heal what is problematic or dysfunctional in ones life.
Secondly it is to promote a deeper understanding of who we are, and how we can enjoy our lives to the maximum.
