Barbara is an accredited Gestalt Psychotherapist, is trained as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist and has worked with multi-disciplinary teams in Perth community and hospice environments and counselled chronically and terminally ill clients and their families.

She has been in private practice at the Cottesloe Counselling Centre for nearly ten years and offers counselling and psychotherapy for a range of issues including depression and anxiety, health and aging, self esteem and confidence, and personal growth and development.

Barbara has a deep interest in the areas of grief, loss and bereavement (death of a loved one) and the impact these issues have on individuals, families and communities. She considers that uncertainty and change, even when it is welcomed (like the birth of a baby for instance), may also generate unexpected grief responses, and this aspect is often misunderstood.

The losses inherent in life events such as relationship breakdown, death, job loss, deterioration in health, and where expectations or dreams are not realized, can bring up unsettling grief reactions and loss of confidence. Giving voice to concerns and expression of emotions allows for grieving and healing to occur and to avoid complications in the future.

Barbara has extensive experience in supporting clients suffering from traumatic loss and unresolved grief. She believes that from adversity we can be 'broken open' and, in each person's own unique way, may come to recognize new opportunities, find more enriched ways of experiencing and living life and, for some, seek deepened philosophical understandings.

Barbara also works with those wanting to solve their relationship difficulties and find value in their differences. Enhancing communication and problem solving skills, understanding personal boundaries, as well as intimacy and control issues can greatly enrich and strengthen relationships.

Barbara offers an humanistic and awareness raising approach in her therapy. Her respectful and encouraging presence assists her clients to find meaning and resolution to their difficulties, to enhance their resilience and self support and to increase their capacity for vitality, personal growth and fulfilment.
